Turkish series fans will be delighted to hear that Netflix has a full slate of new and returning series for 2023.
Returning to Netflix
Another Self
After its successful debut in summer of 2022, Another Self starring Tuba Buyukustun, Seda Bakan and Boncuk Yilmaz, was renewed for a second and third season. The series follows three close friends on a journey to Ayvalik, a seaside town, which reshapes their future. Another Self is a journey of introspection and self discovery. Season 2 is expected to stream in the summer season.
As the Crow Flies
Ibrahim Celikkol fans will be delighted to hear that As the Crow Flies, starring Birce Akalay and the handsome actor, was renewed for a second and third season. In this series, a young fan maneuvers her way into a seasoned anchor’s newsroom but soon confronts the dark side of ambition, envy and the desire to be seen. The second season began filming in November of 2022, and season three will begin filming shortly after the completion of the second season. The release date for the season 2 has yet to be determined.
Fatma
Dark and quirky Fatma has also been renewed for a second season. The series starring Burcu Biricik is about a woman who while searching for her husband, unexpectedly commits murder. With her husband’s dark connections posing a danger, Fatma has no choice but to continue taking lives in order to survive. Releases date for the second season has not yet been determined.
Midnight at the Pera Palace
Also renewed for a second season, is Midnight at the Pera Palace starring Hazal Kaya. The show is based on Charles King’s book entitled ‘Midnight at the Pera Palace: The Birth of Modern Istanbul.’ The series takes place at a historic Istanbul hotel, where a journalist thrust into the past, must stop a plot that could change the fate of modern Turkey.
The Club
The Club part 3 is on its way! The series was released in two parts so far with 10 episodes. The series starring Gokce Bahadir and Baris Arduc is about a mother with a troubled past in cosmopolitan Istanbul, attempting to reconnect with, and help the rebellious daughter she couldn’t raise. In addition to a well-designed period drama set, the storylines, and characters, the show also sheds light on a tumultuous time in Turkey’s history. The timing of the release of the third part is not yet determined.
New to Netflix
Shahmaran
Shamaran is the new Netflix series released in early 2023. The series starring Burak Deniz and Serenay Sarakaya is a fantasy drama about the legend of the snake king. Philosophy professor Sahsu goes to Adana for a lecture but instead finds herself in the midst of a legend. While in Adana Sahsu meets her estranged grandfather for the first time and falls head over heals with her grandfather’s mysterious neighbor. The series is currently streaming on Netflix.
The Tailor
The Tailor, a new Netflix series starring Cagatay Ulusoy and Sifanur Gul is also scheduled for release in 2023. The seven episode series based on a true story, follows a tailor Peyami, who inherited his talent and a successful business from his grandfather. Peyami has a secret he must keep but falls in love with a client, a bride-to-be, whose wedding dress he is hired to sew. This OGM Pictures series is directed by Cem Karcı (The Red Room), and written by Rana Mamatlıoğlu (The Innocents) and Bekir Baran Sıtkı (In Between).
Who Were We Running From
Who Were We Running From is a new Netflix series about a mother and daughter live as fugitives, hiding a mysterious past. The two make hotels their home and see everyone else as a threat. This crime thriller stars Melisa Sozen and Eylul Tumbar.
The Creature
The Creature is a Turkish adaptation of the timeless novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley from famous Turkish filmmaker, Çağan Irmak. The series explores one of the most fundamental questions of humanity, “death and beyond”. Ziya, an adventurous, rebellious and enthusiastic young medical student, strives to be a good physician and cure the many epidemics for which there are no cures. The series boasts a stellar cast including Erkan Kocak Kostendil (Cukur), Taner Olmez (The Protector) and Sinafur Gul (As the Crow Flies).
New Movies on Netflix
10 Days of a Good Man
Uluc Bayraktar, the director of iconic series such as Karadayi, Carpisma and Icerde driects the film noir 10 Days of a Good Man. The movie is about a lawyer turned private investigator who takes on a missing person case, propelling him on an unexpected and life-altering quest. The series starring Nejat Isler and Riza Kocaoglu airs on Netflix in March 2023.
Centilmen
The movie Centilmen follows a gigolo as he falls in love with a young girl. The movie features Cagatay Ulusoy and Ebru Sahin, and is produced by OGM Pictures. It is expected to meet audiences in 2023.
Last Call for Istanbul
Kivanc Tatlitug and Beren Saat are reunited in the upcoming Netflix movie, Last Call for Istanbul. The movie is about New York, love and second chances… Serin, whose luggage was taken by another passenger, crosses paths with Mehmet at New York’s JFK International Airport. The two strangers in search of missing luggage embark on an exploration of love, marriage and loyalty in New York. While there is no set date for release yet, it is likely the movie will stream on Netflix sometime in 2023.
Boğa Boğa
Starring Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ (Yakamoz S-245) and Funda Eryiğit (Ethos), Boğa Boğa is a thriller about a couple from Istanbul who settle in a village in the Aegean region to start a new and peaceful life — only to realize that they have many enemies there. The film is written by Hakan Günday (Persona) and directed by Onur Saylak (Carpisma). It is expected to meet audiences in 2023.
